Perspective Taking Ability Test Features

In this test, people are shown a two-dimensional array of objects and are asked to imagine taking a perspective within the array, and then indicate the direction to a target object from this perspective.

The CPTA test has several unique features that discriminate it qualitatively from all other existing tests. These features are:

Systematic selection of re-orientation angles.

Measuring of the response time in "delayed" condition.
To measure perspective taking (PT) ability, the instructions for each trial in our PTA test are intended to stimulate two-step task processing: people are asked to imagine taking a perspective within the array, and then to indicate the direction to a target object from this perspective. However, it is possible to solve this test successfully by applying a different strategy, namely the mental rotation (MR) strategy (an ability to imagine rotation of objects from a fixed perspective). By using the "delayed' condition and measuring the response time subsequent to the pointing direction instructions, we were able to differentiate successfully between two strategies.

Scoring. Our scoring algorithm takes into account both accuracy and response time. Special attention was taken to differentiate between people who use the perspective taking strategy and those who don't use the perspective taking strategy, including correction for guessing.
